Gear Replacement Procedure

1. Remove the wiper linkage with its electric motor.
2. Separate the motor from the linkage.
3. Mark the gear position relative to the arm. Reassembly should approximate this position; 1 mm precision is not required because zero position is set after assembly.
4. Press or drive the arm out of the old gear.
5. Inspect the steel worm for chips or other damage. Chips can increase wear on the new gear.
6. Smooth damaged sharp edges and remove rust from the worm if present.
7. Warm the replacement gear with a hair dryer before pressing; installation is performed at room temperature.
8. Support the gear on a soft surface, such as a magazine, while pressing in the arm shaft. The fit is tight; a vice can be used for pressing.
9. Do not hammer the arm shaft or force it deeper with the vice; this can damage the gear.
10. Fill the mechanism with lubricant. Loss or drying of the original grease can cause tooth wear.
11. Refit the linkage and connect the electrical plug. Without fitting the blades, switch on the wipers to establish the zero position.
12. After the wipers stop, refit the blades.
