Match the Heater Valve Version
The installed valve P/N is the main selection criterion. Different heater valve versions may be fitted to the listed BMW models; compare the reference and physical design before ordering.
When to Inspect the Heater Valves
- The heater blows only hot air.
- The heater blows only cold air.
- Cabin temperature cannot be adjusted.
- Left and right air temperatures differ.
- Cabin heating is weak in winter.
- Coolant leaks through the heater valve.
Inspect the valves and heating system to identify the cause. These symptoms alone do not establish that the sealing components are faulty.
Repair Components
The kit includes valve cones and sealing components. Gaskets for the pump are also included. Use the components required for the installed valve and pump version; retain unused repair parts.
Valve and Related References
Use the valve references in the application table for selection. All valve and related references are preserved in the Part Number / PN section.
Repair Scope
If the housing and solenoids are sound, the mechanical and sealing components can be serviced without replacing the complete heater valve assembly. Seal replacement can address a coolant leak caused by worn seals. A cracked housing may require replacement of the complete unit.
Important Before Ordering
Compare the installed heater valve OEM/P/N, marking and design with the listed references. Select the correct kit version and do not rely on chassis code alone.
FAQ
Does VN-391 include valve cones?
Yes. VN-391 is the version with replacement valve cones and sealing components.
Are pump gaskets included?
Yes. The kit also includes pump gaskets for the stated repair applications.
Why should I check the pump as well as the valves?
Some listed E31, E32, E34, E38, E39 and E53 versions have a pump beneath the heater valve block. A pump fault can affect the heating system.
Which reference group covers BMW X5 E53?
The table lists BMW X5 E53, 10/1998 - 09/2006, with valve references 64128374995, 64128372016 and 64128391000.

Heater Valve Repair Procedure
- Check both heater valves, right and left, near the under-bonnet fuse box. Switch the heating setting between hot and cold and check for a characteristic click from each valve; a missing click calls for inspection of the electrical section.
- Check the pump. Some E31, E32, E34, E38, E39 and E53 versions have a pump below the heater valve block; a pump fault can affect the heating system.
- The valve block is secured by three nuts. Undo them and disconnect the hoses; disconnect the pump if fitted.
- Disassemble the block. The six bolts differ in length; the shorter bolts go in the centre.
- Inspect the rubber inserts. Replace torn or hardened parts; intact rubber should remain elastic.
- Remove the plastic bushings to access the internal rubber seals.
- Replace worn elements with the corresponding kit components.
- Retain unused repair components.
