Motor and Gear Inspection

Listed references: 141409360, 8200734788 and 288100236R. If the drive fails to operate or operates intermittently, diagnose the mechanism and inspect gear teeth, worm damage and lubrication. The mechanical gear does not repair a separate electrical or control fault.

Replacement Procedure

1. Remove the wiper linkage together with the electric motor.
2. Remove the motor from the linkage.
3. Mark the gear position relative to the lever. Reassembly needs approximately the same position, not 1mm accuracy; set the zero position after assembly as described below.
4. Drive the lever out of the gear.
5. Inspect the steel worm for damage, including chipped areas.
6. Chips can cause increased gear wear during operation.
7. Smooth the damaged worm area to remove sharp edges.
8. Remove rust from the worm if present after storage.
9. Press the new gear into place.
10. The gear requires a tight fit.
11. Warm the gear with a hair dryer before pressing it in.
12. Support the plastic gear on something soft, such as a magazine. Do not hammer the lever shaft or force it farther with a vice; that can damage the gear. A vice may be used for controlled pressing.
13. Carry out installation at room temperature.
14. Fill the mechanism with grease. Old grease can wash out or dry out, causing tooth wear when the mechanism runs without lubrication.
15. Refit the linkage and connect the electrical connector. With the wiper arms/blades still removed, switch the wipers on to establish the zero position.
16. After the wiper motor stops, fit the wiper arms/blades.
17. The wiper motor gear replacement is complete.
