The BMW Vanos system on N series engines is very capricious and demanding on the quality and oil change interval. Most often, it is the Vanos control solenoid valve that fails. A very rare case of failure is a break in the electromagnetic coil, but the most common is a shift in characteristics, i.e. the valve simply does not have time to respond to the signal from the BMW engine control unit, and the Vanos BMW system recognizes the malfunction. Before installing the valve on the motor, be sure to clean the check valve screens. It is also better to combine valve replacement with an oil change and flushing the oil system. Replacing the VANOS valve itself takes no more than 5 minutes. If after replacing the valve, resetting errors and adapting VANOS, the malfunction in the VANOS system remains, it is necessary to check the actuators of the VANOS system, wear of the timing chain and dampers, oil pressure, condition of the wiring, sensors and engine control unit.
Signs of a faulty BMW VANOS valve:
- floating idle speed (especially during cold start)
- increased fuel consumption, poor acceleration dynamics, decreased responsiveness to the gas pedal
- errors on the VANOS system (Check may not light up)
- difficult engine starting
