• unstable idle speed (especially during cold starts)
• increased gas consumption, "thoughtful" gas pedal
• errors on the BMW VANOS system (Check Engine may not light up)
• difficulty starting the engine
  

On BMW N-series engines, the Vanos BMW valve itself acts as a filter, and therefore requires periodic cleaning to remove contaminants. The VANOS system on these engines is very demanding on the quality and oil change intervals. Therefore, before installing new valves, we recommend replacing the engine oil and flushing the engine lubrication system.
