Different heater valve versions can be fitted to BMW 5 Series E39, BMW 7 Series E38, BMW X5 E53 and BMW 5 Series E34. Check the installed valve P/N rather than selecting by vehicle model alone.

When to Inspect the Heater Valves

• The heater blows only hot air.
• The heater blows only cold air.
• Cabin temperature cannot be adjusted.
• Left and right air temperatures differ.
• Cabin heating is weak in winter.
• Coolant leaks through the valve.

These symptoms call for inspection of the heater valves; they are not a diagnosis of seal or diaphragm failure by themselves.

Repair Scope

If the valve housing and solenoids are serviceable, the internal sealing components can be replaced without buying the complete heater valve assembly. Seal replacement can address coolant leakage caused by worn seals. A cracked housing may require replacement of the assembly.
