This DISA repair kit is designed to restore the functionality of the intake manifold adjustment system used in BMW engines N51, N52, N52N and N52K. These engines use a DISA unit mounted on the intake manifold that controls airflow inside the intake system to optimize engine performance.
The DISA system operates using a vacuum actuator controlled by a solenoid valve and the engine ECU. The internal flap adjusts the path of the intake air by switching between runners of different lengths and diameters. At lower and medium engine speeds, longer and narrower intake runners are used to improve torque. At higher RPM, the airflow is redirected through shorter and wider runners to maximize engine power.
This system helps maintain consistent torque and smooth engine performance across the entire RPM range.
Over time, the original plastic components inside the DISA unit can wear out. The connection between the flap and the actuator lever often becomes loose, which causes the flap to move freely and produce rattling or clicking noises. If ignored, the flap may eventually detach completely and enter the intake manifold, which can lead to serious engine damage.
Replacing the entire DISA unit is expensive and not always a long-term solution, since new OEM units still use plastic internal components that can fail again.
