Eliminate dry starts and engine rattle with the ultimate oil system upgrade for your classic BMW.
If you notice a delayed oil pressure light or hear a metallic “knocking” sound during a cold start, your oil filter housing check valve has likely failed. In M-series engines, the original plastic valve wears out over time, allowing oil to drain back into the sump overnight. As a result, the engine is left without proper lubrication during the first critical seconds after startup.
SOLUTION
BMW supplies this valve only as part of a complete and expensive oil filter housing assembly. However, in most cases, only the check valve itself needs replacement.
We offer a reinforced, standalone oil filter housing check valve manufactured from high-quality aluminum alloys and steel. It is engineered to outlast the engine itself.

COMMON PROBLEM
One of the common issues in BMW vehicles equipped with M-series engines is wear of the oil filter housing check valve. Over time, the valve body can degrade, causing incorrect positioning of the valve mechanism and allowing oil to drain into the sump.
Typical symptoms:
-
Metallic clatter or knocking noise during cold start
-
Delayed oil pressure warning light
-
Temporary oil starvation on startup
The oil filter housing valve performs a critical function: it maintains oil inside the filter housing while the engine is off, preventing oil from draining out. Failure to address this issue can result in premature engine wear.
PRODUCT ADVANTAGES
-
Improved reinforced design that eliminates premature wear
-
Service life exceeding the engine lifespan
-
Valve body cannot loosen inside the oil housing
-
Increased flow capacity compared to the original plastic valve
-
Manufactured from durable aluminum alloys and steel
IMPORTANT BEFORE REPLACEMENT
Valve replacement will not solve the issue if the following problems exist:
-
Worn or hardened oil filter housing sealing rings
-
Blocked oil pickup or oil pump suction issues
-
Worn crankshaft bearings or crank assembly components
-
Worn oil pump
-
Incorrect oil viscosity for engine mileage
-
Poor-quality oil or excessively long oil change intervals
If the valve seating surface shows oil leakage, lapping of the contact surfaces is required.
VALVE LAPPING PROCEDURE
-
Disassemble the valve.
-
Remove residual oil.
-
Apply a small amount of cylinder head valve lapping paste.
-
Rotate the valve core against the contact surface using a circular motion.
-
Thoroughly clean the valve.
-
Repeat the inspection.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
-
Remove the old valve using appropriate special tools.
-
Clean the mounting bore from oil and debris.
-
Install the new valve carefully, ensuring proper alignment and no distortion.
IMPORTANT: Installing the valve deeper than 1 mm below the contact surface may cause it to jam. -
Replace the oil filter gasket during reassembly.
This upgrade eliminates dry starts, restores proper oil retention in the filter housing, and protects your engine from premature wear.
