One of the common problems of BMW N20 engines is the wear of the turbocharger overpressure relief system (Westgate, Westgate). Practice has shown that at 100,000 km the turbine already has considerable wear of the westgate. In the common people they are called "gates", "dampers" of the turbine. The reasons for failure are wear and tear associated with high operating temperature, constant temperature changes, as well as aggressive working conditions (water, sand, dust and dirt from the street fall on the traction).
Indirect signs of a worn-out westgate on the BMW N20 turbine:
- Rattling from the exhaust manifold
- Increased fuel consumption, deteriorating acceleration dynamics
- With a sharp long-term acceleration after 90 km / h (for example, when overtaking) The ECU of the N20 motor records an error about low boost pressure, the check does not always light up.
- Errors on low boost pressure
- Errors due to ignition failures at high engine speeds
The manufacturer offers to replace the turbine in the assembly. We also suggest replacing the Westgate BMW N20 repair kit.
Installation on this motor is possible without removing the turbine - for this you need:
- Remove the exhaust manifold with the catalyst (check for backlash on the turbine, it may have to be removed and repaired, check the condition of the catalyst)
- Unscrew the BMW H20 Westgate vacuum regulator
- Dismantle the old BMW N20 flap with a grinder, noting the position relative to the turbine.
- Attention! Installation of the flap is impossible without an argon welding machine. Install the new flap in the position as the old one was installed. Weld the lever to the rod. (Don't forget to disconnect the battery)
- Screw on the vacuum regulator (replace worn vacuum lines, clean or replace the electromagnetic control valve), install the exhaust manifold.
